God is angry, and a flood is coming. But Noah is building a boat: wide enough and deep enough not just for his family, but for a cargo of birds and beasts, both great and small. For forty days and forty nights, this chorus of unlikely shipmates endure a mighty storm, in the hope that a new world will be waiting for them on the other side.
Lyndsey Turner directs a joyous new production of Benjamin Britten’s masterpiece combining the talents of professional singers, actors and musicians with those of school children and the local community. Marking the first collaboration between Theatre Royal Stratford East and English National Opera, Noye’s Fludde speaks of courage, redemption and the promise of a new beginning.

Benjamin Britten (1913 - 1976) was a British composer, pianist and conductor. The most significant British composer of the post-war period, Britten was the first British composer to devote the major part of his output to the operatic stage. Beginning with the international success of Peter Grimes in June 1945, his sixteen operas, which include chamber operas and works for children, are now considered repertory pieces. Other notable works include Paul Bunyan, Billy Budd and Gloriana, The Rape of Lucretia, Curlew River and Death in Venice. Among Britten’s notable achievements outside the opera house were orchestral pieces such as the Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, Sinfonia da Requiem, The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, Spring Symphony and Symphony for Cello and Orchestra.

Louise Callinan will play Mrs Noah
The first Australian to be accepted into the Young Artist Program at the Opéra National de Paris, mezzo soprano Louise Callinan is also the winner of the prestigious AROP prize of Opéra National de Paris. She performed as a soloist for Opéra National de Paris for seventeen years and also with the BBC Symphony, Chicago Symphony, l'Orchestre National d'Ile de France, Théâtre du Châtelet, LA Opera, Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Opera Australia, Israeli Opera, Opéra de Rennes, Angers Nantes Opéra and Theatre de l'Opera Luxembourg.
Louise began her career with roles such as Angelina (La Cenerentola), Rosina (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Dorabella (Cosi fan Tutte) and has interpreted numerous roles at Opéra National de Paris, notably Meg Page (Falstaff ) conducted by Conlon, a Woman (K ... of Manoury), 2nd Lady (Die Zauberflöte) Suor Zelatrice (Suor Angelica) conducted by Philippe Jordan and Samaritana (Francesca da Rimini) conducted by Daniel Oren. Louise starred as the 2nd lady in the film version of (The Magic Flute) directed by Kenneth Branagh.
Recently, her roles have included Tigrana (Edgar) Dalila (Samson and Dalila) in Valladolid, Erda (Das Rheingold) and (Siegfried) and Waltraute (Götterdämmerung) with REMIX together under the direction of Peter Rundel at the Casa da Musica in Porto, Strasbourg - Festival Palace, Paris - Cité de la Musique, Nîmes Theater, Théâtre de Caen, Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines Theater, Grand Théâtre de Reims, Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg, Amneris (Aïda) and Belarus Opera Minsk, Herodiade (Herodiade - Massenet) Laura Adorno (La Gioconda) in Valladolid and Rossweisse (Die Walküre), Wellgunde (Das Rheingold and Götterdämmerung) and 2nd Lady(Die Zauberflöte) at the Paris National Opera conducted by Philippe Jordan.
On the concert platform highlights include Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with REMIX ensemble at the Casa da Musica in Porto, Handel’s Messiah with the Sydney Philharmonia and Verdi’s Requiem at the Royal Festival Hall London. and a recent return to the Casa da Musica in Porto for Mahler 's Symphony no 2.
In July 2019, Louise will make her debut with English National Opera as Mrs Noye in Britten's "Noyes Fludde" and in February 2020 also make her debut with Scottish Opera as the Ist Secretary in John Adam's "Nixon in China".
Marcus Farnsworth will play Noah
Marcus Farnsworth was awarded First Prize at the 2009 Wigmore Hall/Kohn Foundation International Song Competition and the Song Prize at the 2011 Kathleen Ferrier Competition. He has appeared many times at Wigmore Hall with pianists Malcolm Martineau, Julius Drake, Joseph Middleton and Graham Johnson, as well as the Myrthen Ensemble.
The 2018/19 season has seen a return to the BBC Symphony Orchestra for performances of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s The Silver Tassie and the world première of Cheryl Frances-Hoad’s Last Man Standing. Other highlights include Bernstein’s Candide with the London Symphony Orchestra under Marin Alsop and with Bergen National Opera, and HK Gruber’s Frankenstein with Aurora Orchestra. He has recently returned from a tour of Australia with the Gabrieli Consort for performances of Purcell’s King Arthur.
Recent highlights have included a performance and recording of Vaughan Williams’s A Sea Symphony conducted by Martyn Brabbins, and John Adams’s The Wound Dresser, both with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He appeared in Cal McCrystal’s acclaimed new production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe for English National Opera, and made his debut at Teatro Real Madrid in Weill’s Street Scene. Future plans include a return to the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, for a tour of Peter Grimes plus a European tour with the Gabrieli Consort of Purcell’s King Arthur.
Marcus is Founder and Artistic Director of the Southwell Music Festival and has recently been appointed Head of Vocal & Choral Department at Chetham’s Music School in Manchester.
