Lanre Malaolu’s brand-new theatrical work Now, I See opens at Stratford East on Friday 10 May. The show is an exploration into identity, forgiveness and healing, presented through a fusion of movement, song and text. Ahead of the show opening, we spoke to cast members Oliver Alvin-Wilson and Tendai Humphrey Sitima, who play Kieron and Adeyeye about the script, their characters, and the rehearsal process.
What drew you to Now, I See?
Oliver: Its raw beauty and honesty. And I'd never felt so moved and seen when reading a script for the first time before.
Tendai: Initially, the idea of working with and learning from Lanre. I was then floored by his script and simply had to be involved in bringing this story to life.
How have the rehearsals been?
Oliver: Very challenging, extremely creative, and lots of laughter.
Tendai: Rehearsals have been magical. This company are the most compassionate, wise excellent people have ever worked with. As a result, rehearsals have been safe, and rewarding. They have also been very challenging, this piece demands excellence and trying to get there has been very hard work.
How is movement used throughout the piece?
Oliver: The movement, dialogue and sound are constantly in a dance with each other.
Tendai: Movement is dialogue. They are interlinked and interchangeable. I’ve never seen movement approached in this way.
What are you looking forwards to the audience seeing?
Oliver: Hopefully seeing elements of themselves, or people they care about.
Tendai: Themselves.
How will the audience feel after seeing, Now, I See?
Oliver: Joyful, reflective, and inspired. And even better, if it makes them want to spend more time with their family.
Tendai: I hope they’ll want to pick up the phone and call a family member, or an old friend and talk. This show is ultimately uplifting and healing and if anyone feels like the show puts them on a path towards that, then we have succeeded.
Now, I See opens on Friday 10 May, and runs until Saturday 01 June. Witness the exploration of letting go as a family begin to confront their shared past, and learn more about the show here.
